Noah Crist – Welcome to Loch Raven (Single Review)

Neoclassical composer and producer Noah Crist paints an alluring portrait of nature on his recent single “Welcome to Loch Raven”. From Baltimore, Maryland, Crist sets nuanced and harmonically rich neoclassical piano against the backdrop of a field recording, or in this case a “lake recording”, of Loch Raven.

Over nine minutes, the single folds in naturalistic sounds of lake water lapping, gentle birdsong, and other real-world accidentals alongside Crist’s developing piano lines, which range from simple minimalist ostinatos to more exciting, beguiling, and complex melodic structures. The generous length and environmental setting imbue the recording with an escapist quality and invite the listener to relax and contemplate while ensuring the atmosphere never becomes static. Crist keeps his composition alive with creative turns in mood, and when the restless composition suddenly drops, Crist lets its sentiment linger with delicate strikes as the field recording patiently comes to an end.

“Welcome to Loch Raven” by Noah Crist is a deceptively maximalist work in which solo piano and field recordings combine to create a complete sensory experience.
